Filling your home with pumpkin themed home decor is enough to get you in the Halloween or Thanksgiving spirit, but it isn’t enough to make sure you’re prepared for the fall. September is here and autumn is in full swing which means homeowners, it’s time to prepare your home, and not just your decor, for the seasonal changes that come with in transition from blazing summer heat, to cooler cooler weather.
We’ve put together a checklist of things to do to prepare your home for fall.
- Clean your gutters!
Making sure your gutters are in the proper condition to work and drain water properly can save you from irreparable damage (i.e. flooding) they might cause if they are potentially clogged. If you have a damaged gutter, replacing them can save your potential repairs you’ll need to fix following potential rain showers. - Weatherproof your home
Checking to see if you have any drafts in your home through windows or doors and fixing them via weatherstripping is the most effective way to keep your energy costs, like heating, to a minimum throughout the fall and winter months. - Protect your outdoor furniture
Although your furniture may be fit to last abrasive weather conditions (thus the outdoor furniture title) , protecting your outdoor furniture by storing it indoors or covering the pieces with proper reinforcement will assist in their longevity. - Replace your HVAC filter
Cleaning or replacing your HVAC filter along with checking to see your system is properly working will guarantee you are able to properly heat your home and save on energy expenses simultaneously. - Check you alarms and replace their batteries
Making sure your alarms are properly working is something you should make a practice of at least once a year. If you are already working to transition your home from “hot weather mode” to “cold weather mode” check to see if any batteries need to be replaced. - Protect your home from unwelcome guests (termites and pests)
Termites and pests have an affinity for places with accessible food, moisture and warmth. During the winter they often hide in the most unsuspecting places. A thorough examination of your home to seal any cracks these unwelcome guests may be able to creep in from will set you up for success through the rest of the year.
